It's Henne time

Miami Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown's season is over.

So now what with the Wildcat? You hate seeing a good guy like Brown go down again with an injury, this time with a Lisfranc sprain of the foot, but it might be the impetus to get Chad Henne more passing plays.

The Dolphins have to do that. Henne is their future. With Brown running the Wildcat, it stunted the growth of Henne, who showed in the drive to the winning points against Tampa Bay last week that he is ready for more.

Henne is a strong-armed, accurate passer who needs to get into a rhythm. The Wildcat doesn't allow that.

But I bet you the Dolphins use Pat White in Thursday night's game against Carolina as the Wildcat trigger, rather than letting Henne free.

If they do, it will be a mistake.

The kid is ready.

When Brown returns next season, he will play behind a quarterback who can get big chunks in the passing game.

What a novel approach that is in Miami.

It's Henne time

Henne is a strong-armed, accurate passer who needs to get into a rhythm. The Wildcat doesn't allow that.

How is running the ball out of the base offense any different in that regard?  Handing the ball off to Ronnie or Ricky and standing there watching the play helps him to develop a rhythm?  I don't think so.

The wildcat is just a way to run the football, except you don't have the qb on the field now which allows you to have an extra blocker which the defense has to account for.  When you run the ball, the qb is a non-factor, so if you're going to run it, might as well take the qb off the field.

I bet you're right.  The Dolphins should use Pat White against the Panthers.  If anybody needs to get into a rhythm it's him.  Getting on the field for 3 plays and riding the bench the rest of the game is not the way to do that.  It's not a surprise he hasn't done much this season.  If they get him on the field with some more consistency, he might show a lot more.

As far as letting Henne free, that would be a mistake.  The kid is not quite ready.  Yeah, he's had some great drives to end a few games this year, and has looked poised and confident doing so, but he still makes some blunders.  Did you miss the pick he threw against Tampa that almost lost them the game?  Somehow I suspect if Tampa didn't score so quickly and the Dolphins lost that game, we wouldn't be talking about him being ready.

Henne has had some flashes of brilliance this year, but he's benefited immensely from the league's 4th best rushing attack that opens up passing lanes and a defense that has played pretty well as of late that has kept him from having to play from behind.  Now that Ronnie Brown is done, that protection is gone, and if Henne has to put this team on his back and throw the ball 40 times, they're in big trouble.

But I bet you the Dolphins use Pat White in Thursday night's game against Carolina as the Wildcat trigger, rather than letting Henne free.  If they do, it will be a mistake.  The kid is ready.

Abandon the Wildcat?

Why?  They're averaging over 6 yards per wildcat play!  It's not conventional, but it's very effective.  So Henne has to jog to the sideline 6-10 times a game.  They're not running it every play and it allows them to keep the down and distance reasonable for the young QB.  They don't have the receivers to chuck the ball all over the field and the offensive line is big and physical geared towards the run game.  No team should ever go away from what they do best  For the Dolphins it's the wildcat.  Abandoning it is not a winning formula.  Just because Prisco doesn't like watching it doesn't mean you give up on it.

Henne's not ready. But that's not the point--he's not going to get ready without taking some serious lumps. That's how every quarterback learns the pro game. So yes, the Dolphins should put more of the game in his hands and reduce, not remove the Wildcat in their ofensive game plan.

But there's another reason to do that other than Henne's readiness or lack thereof. Ronnie Brown is the big reason the Wildcat works, him along with the Dolphins full acceptance of it as part of their offense. It doesn't work as well with Ricky Williams or Pat White taking the snaps, nor would anyone expect it to. Ronnie is the catalyst for that part of the Dolphins offense and it won't be as effective without him, if only because there's a big dropoff in talent from Ricky Williams to the backup. Ricky will get keyed on, and Pat White hasn't shown he can do much of anything yet.

So yes, it's Henne time, and there will be some ugliness along with that. In the long run, it's probably for the best.

the protection is gone really? have you not seen how ricky is running the ball this year? flashes of 5 years ago, guy has been a beast..I think they will be fine with ricky carrying the load the rest of the way.

You know what would be a mistake?   taking out a very effective formation out of the Dolphins playbook because pete prisco hates it.  You are on an island by yourself.

How is it that Prisco can't mention the Dolphins without predicting the Wildcat's demise and/or pimping Henne's arm strength? Hell, sometimes he can't even mention the state of Florida without touching those subjects. Pete, buddy, obsessive compulsive disorder much?

I Disagree. I think the Wildcat is the most effective way to run the ball. Granted losing Ronnie Brown is a huge loss for the fins, but if they want to make a run at the playoffs, others will have to step up. Who will fill the void? With Patrick Cobb also out for the season its pretty slim pickens in south Florida. Pat white isnt the answer although he may help the situation. I think Ricky Williams will have to take the snaps and either Davone Bess or Lex Hilliard will be the option guy. Maybe Hilliard will take the snaps, he is a power type rusher. One thing is for sure... dont expect the Dolphins to abandon the Wildcat.

Once again, Prisco is discrediting the wildcat and saying the future is in their QB.  I completely disagree.  Henne might be a great, future QB, but no team runs the Wildcat better than the Dolphins.  With Ronnie Brown now done for the year, it's Pat White's turn to get some major reps.  Pat White is a huge x-factor for this team.  The QB position is important, but it's not the core of the Miami offense right now.  I think Henne is more effectve when the wildcat is having success.
