Brandon Meriweather went to the Pro Bowl last season.

He was released by the New England Patriots Saturday.

Two things about that: The Pro Bowl voting is a joke  and the Patriots are one of the teams that will cast aside premium draft picks if they can't play, rather than hold onto them for looks sake.

Meriweather regressed in a big way in 2010 after showing promise in 2009. He wasn't great in coverage, and it showed.

If you can't cover these days, you aren't worth having on the field.

So if  you hear the phrase "Pro Bowl player," take it with a grain of salt.

Right, Brandon Meriweather?

Pats admit mistake

What does it matter? Cheatinchick will get bounced in the first round of the playoffs when his D fails because they don't have the advance tape of the other team's game plan. And we'll all laugh as usual. Thanks for Seymour f*g...hahahahahahaha

Wow. "Cheatinchick" is a new one.  Is this what all the 11 year olds are using for insults these days?  By the way, how can a Raiders fan knock the Patriots?  Until your senile old man for an owner isn't running the team anymore you won't see the playoffs in your dreams. I'm the first one to admit my Lions sucked for an eternity but new management is finally giving us hope.  Regardless, you'll be hard pressed to find many Lions fans knocking the Patriots organization, that's for sure.  You're an idiot.

More proof Cheatriots can't draft...Tate, Meriwrather...the busts go on and on....

Cheatriots? Are you an 11 year old little boy? Grow up man.... these boards are for real NFL fans that love the game, not punks like you that waste people's time.   The Patriots have been one of the best organizations in all of sports  over the 10 or 15 years.   The cheating or "spygate" you refer to is a joke.  After they got "caught" they won like 12 games in a row for God sakes.  They lost the Superbowl and a perfect season on a miracle play that will go down in the history.  They won 11 games with a qb that hadn't started since highschool when Brady went down for the year, and then they re-tooled with rookies all over the place last season and still made the playoffs.

You should worry a little more about your franchise qb in Pittsburgh then the Patriots.  Your qb is only one more rape or sexual assault case away from the Rooneys cutting his ass and your team starting Dixon or Batch at qb instead.  And don't kid yourself, you might be ok with Ben but the Rooneys didn't forgive so easily.

They took in Ras-I Dowling, which they took high on the draft, and if that hamstring holds up, he is projected to play safety/cornerback. So presumably the replacement of Brandon Meriweather. It looks like it is risky for the Patriots but let see if their gamble pays off.

I dont think Meriweather is a bad safety. I just believe he isn't a belichick type of player. He isn't consistent and he isn't always in the right place at the right time. But he did make plays. My concern is that every year we seem to be too unathletic on defense. With all these athletic TE and WR we need to have some athletic DB's and LB's. McCourty, Guyton, and Mayo are the only players last year that played consistently last year that showed impressive speed and athleticism. I hope Josh Barrett pans out. He plays hard physical and moves well for a in the box safety. I hope Meriweather doesn't blow up somewhere else, especially somewhere in our division.

Locally, it was always reported as a surprise each time Brandon Meriweather was named to the Bowl.  Hw wasnt Rodney Harrson, Eugene Wilson, or even James Sanders peer.  Better to move on.  Reminds me of when the Pats cut Lawer Milloy in 2003 and went on to a 14-2 season.  And Lawyer Milloy was more impressive.
