I keep hearing how receiver Plaxico Burress will have this big list of teams wanting his services.
Did I miss the memo that said 34-year-old receivers who were never that fast in the first place and haven't played a down of football in three years are wanted commodities?
Are you kidding me?
Look, I like Burress a lot as a person. He's always been one of the nicer NFL players.
Yes, I mean that.
He just got pinched for doing something really dumb, and he had to pay the price. He was in prison for 20 months for carrying and firing a gun -- it went off accidentally -- but was scheduled for release Monday. That's a long time away from the game -- even for a young man.
Mike Vick came out of prison 30 years old. He was four years younger and he plays a position that doesn't demand the same speed requirements, even though that is a big part of his game.
When Burress was at his best, he was a big, strong receiver, not a fast one. He was able to average 15.5 yards per catch because he could beat corners with his strength, not his speed. He had decent speed, but he wasn't a burner. He might still be some of that now, but when a slower receiver slows down some that shows up.
Expect the team that signs Burress to give him a short-term deal with a minimal signing bonus, which reduces the risk. I spoke with two personnel men in the past week and both said the same thing. I hope Burress comes out and proves us wrong.
Like I said, I like him. He's always been classy with the media and those players who know him swear by the guy. I hope he gets a big deal, plays four more years, and ends his football career on a high.
I just have my doubts.
